RussMatt Central Florida Collegiate Invitational to Begin Play
Auburndale, Fla. (February 10, 2016) – Play in the 2016 RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational is set to begin Tuesday, February 16, as Warner University will open play by facing St. Joseph’s College from New York. More than 324 NAIA, JUCO, Division I, II and III colleges and university baseball teams, representing 250 schools, will participate in the annual college Spring Training program taking place from February 15 to March 30 on baseball fields throughout Polk County. While Auburndale’s Lake Myrtle Sports Park and Winter Haven’s Chain of Lakes Park will host the majority of the 1083 games scheduled, other facilities such as Henley Field, Southeastern University, Warner University and a number of high school baseball diamonds will see action during the event’s seven-week schedule of games and practices.
This year’s RussMatt event will see an expanded schedule of games and accommodate more college teams participating in throughout Polk County. This year’s schedule will feature 30 more schools, 34 more teams and more than 120 additional games than the 2015 RussMatt Invitational. The four new baseball fields that have just been completed at the Lake Myrtle Sports Park has opened up the opportunity for the event organizer to invite more teams and schedule more games this year.
A number of teams ranked highly in the National Collegiate Writers Association polls will be featured in this year’s RussMatt Central Florida Collegiate Baseball Invitational including NCAA Division II teams Seton Hill (#7) and Grand Valley (#13). A strong contingent of Division III programs will also kick off their season in this year’s event including four pre-season NCAA Division III Top-10 teams (SUNY Cortland #1, Wisconsin-Lacrosse #3, Ramapo #8, Wisconsin-Whitewater #9) and three other programs currently ranked in the Top-25 in Division III (Wisconsin Stevens-Point #12, Wartburg #21, Coe #23). A number of strong NAIA and JUCO programs will also face off in Central Florida including top ranked programs such as Davenport (MI) and Keiser (FL). Local programs will also take to Polk County baseball diamonds in this year’s Invitational including Florida Southern and Warner University.
