RussMatt Central Florida Collegiate Baseball Invitational Set to Begin Play
Play in the 2015 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational is set to begin on Friday, February 13, as the University of Maine Black Bears will open play by facing the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers. More than 220 NAIA, JUCO, Division I, II and III colleges and universities from across the United States will be represented at this year’s collegiate spring training event. A total of 290 NAIA, JUCO, Division I, II and III baseball teams will participate in the annual college Spring Training program taking place from February 13 to March 31 on baseball fields throughout Polk County.
While Auburndale’s Lake Myrtle Sports Park and Winter Haven’s Chain of Lakes Park will host the majority of the 965 games scheduled, other facilities such as Henley Field, Southeastern University, Warner University and a number of high school baseball complexes will see action during the event’s seven-week schedule of games and practices. A number of teams ranked highly in preseason polls will be featured in this year’s RussMatt Central Florida Collegiate Baseball Invitational including NCAA Division II teams Grand Valley (#15) and Drury (#23). A strong contingent of Division III programs will also kick off their season in this year’s event including four pre-season NCAA Division III Top-10 teams (St. Thomas #3, SUNY Cortland #5, Southern Maine #7, Webster #8) and three other programs currently ranked in the Top-25 (Wisconsin Stevens-Point #12, Rowan #14, Eastern Connecticut #19. A number of strong NAIA and JUCO programs will also face off in Central Florida including local favorite Southeastern University and top ranked programs such as Embry-Riddle (FL), Davenport (MI), Point Park (PA) and Mount Vernon Nazarene (OH).
