Florida Classic Tournament to Bring 80 Adult Soccer Teams to Polk County
Auburndale, Fla. (January 12, 2016) – Play in the 2016 Florida State Soccer Association (FSSA) Florida Classic is set to begin on Friday, January 15 at the Lake Myrtle Sports Park in Auburndale. This year marks the seventh year of the adult soccer tournament and the Florida State Soccer Association is expecting 80 teams to be competing during the four day event. Sixteen states including Oregon, Michigan, California and New York will be represented in the event, in addition to international teams from Trinidad and Tobago and Canada, will be traveling to Polk County to play in what has become one of the largest adult competitive soccer tournaments in the country.
Pool play in the 2016 Florida Classic will begin on Friday, January 15 at 3 PM and will continue on Saturday, January 16 and Sunday, January 20. Tournament semi-final and championship games will be held on Monday, January 21. Championships will be contested in nine different divisions: Coed, Men’s Over 40, Men’s Over 40 Recreation, Men’s Over 50, Men’s Over 55, Men’s Over 60, Men’s Over 65, Women’s Open and Men’s Open divisions. In the 2015 Florida Classic the oldest player competing in the Over 65 age group was 84 years old.
In addition to the players, the four day event is expected to bring more than 3,500 friends and family members that are coming to cheer on their favorite teams. The economic impact to Polk County is estimated to be more than $2.7 million.
